Dry Needling is an incredible treatment that with just a few little tweaks can give you so much relief. Have a needle phobia? That's ok! We can work with that! But if you are not sure what all this dry needling is all about? Read on and find out more.
Not to be confused with acupuncture, myofascial dry needling is an invasive treatment where acupuncture needles are inserted into trigger points to encourage the bodies natural ability to heal itself.
The type of needle is important and ensuring quality acupuncture needles are used are paramount to a successful treatment. We use only Tianmen acupuncture needles with a small diameter to allow for the best interaction between the needle and the connective tissues.
When the needle is inserted into the area of complaint, there is usually a localised twitch response. This stimulates circulation to the area, reduces inflammation and swelling as added benefits. The needles are removed and placed into a hygienic sharps container and disposed of appropriately.
Dry needling is fantastic for a varying number of reasons, alot of which are complex and not well known. Essentially, dry needling releases a chemical, mechnical and electrical communication in the body that encourages the body’s own ability to heal, increases blood flow, desensitises the central nervous system and that’s just to name a few.
If you find that you suffer from a chronic or acute pain or have tried other types of manual therapy without success, it is an excellent choice.
Several studies have and are being undertaken at the University of Queensland to find out more about the effects on the body that dry needling has.
What we do know about Dry Needling to date, is that clients who undertake the process with a fully qualified therapist typically have instant relief and improved range of motion and pain free movement.
Yes. As with any kind of treatment there are always risk factors involved. As dry needling is considered an invasive technique there are minimal risks of infection, small bleeds and in serious cases pneumothorax which is a puncturing of the lung. Only fully qualified and fully trained therapists are able to perform dry needling and will walk you through any concerns that you may have prior to engaging any dry needling treatment with you.
If you have a needle phobia than dry needling may or may not be the best treatment option however, if you are open to trialing this form of treatment, we can work with you to ensure all your questions are answered by coming down to our clinic and having a face to face chat.
